You aren't gonna get rivalry points for every nice thing you do during the game. And it seems to be easy enough to romance someone even if they aren't a main part of you party. In my playthroughs I pretty much only used Merril for her companion quests, flirted with her when possible, and still managed to get her to move in with me.
